Often we are asked about using real estate photos for for other types of distribution. The best way we have found to answer that question is by using an analogy. The rental car comparison to be specific Don't laugh, or stop here because they are not dissimilar.
Our Client may say "I paid for the photos, therefore I own them"
Geocentric response: "No, what you actually paid for is usage of the photos," and we will go on explaining from there.
Geocentric Photography: "Have you rented a car in the past?"
Client: "Yes, of course I have, and lawn equipment and the like also, but what does that have to do with photos?"
Geocentric Photography: "Follow us then, if you rent a car or backhoe for 2 days, it will cost you about twice as much as just a one day rental. Right! "
Client: "Well Yes, it would."
Geocentric Photography: "That's like paying for usage of the car or backhoe twice rather than just one time only.
Now, lets say you rent a big van instead of a little economy car, it is also going to cost you more, Right?"
Client: "Most definitely."
Geocentric Photography: "That would be like using a photograph full size instead of quarter page or less in a newspaper or ad"
Client: "Yes, I guess so I just never thought of it that way."
Geocentric Photography: "If we take that thought a bit further, when you rent a brand new top of the line sports car it's going to cost you a lot more per day than that little compact car. right?"
Client: "Yes, it sure will."
Geocentric Photography: "OK, that would be like the difference between using the photos in a national magazine with a huge circulation or in the local paper with only a few thousand readers."
Geocentric Photography: "How about when you rent a car for five days, you'll usually get a break right?"
Client: "Yes I would expect one."
Geocentric Photography: "See we agree, that is what on multiple usage, we will give our clients a break."
Geocentric Photography: "Lets, continue our analogies, When you add a GPS, Car Seat or Ski Rack to your rental car, the price goes up with additional fees. If Geocentric does a photo shoot and you want an elevated photo, that provides a unique perspective not attained by other photographers it is also extra, and thus, worth more, just as your GPS adds value to the car rental. Same as if we have to do a lot of work in our processing center to add a fire in the fireplace or image in the tv sets. or adding a short video to the photo shoot would."
Client: "Hummm, I'm seeing where this is going now."
Geocentric Photography: "Now, you've paid the car rental fee; you've used the car. Do you own the rental car?"
Client: "No, the rental company does."
Geocentric Photography: "EXACTLY, just as we own the copyright to all our photographs."
Geocentric Photography: "You see, it really isn't so different. We charge a fee based on usage, just as the rental car company does."
Client: "Yea, I'm getting it now. Geocentric owns the rights to all the photos and rents them to me to use for marketing a home. If I want to share the photos with another agent or use them in any other way I need to contact Geocentric for the pricing of that type of rental. Otherwise It would be considered theft of services punishable by law."
